Whole wheat pasta is generally considered the healthiest type of pasta. But is whole wheat pasta also gluten-free and does it fit into a gluten-free diet? We tell you more about it…
Is whole wheat pasta gluten-free?
Whole wheat pasta is not gluten-free and therefore does not fit into a gluten-free diet. Whole wheat pasta is made from whole wheat. The wheat from which whole wheat pasta is made contains gluten. Therefore, this makes whole wheat pasta not gluten-free and pasta it not in a gluten-free diet. Gluten-free pasta is made from rice and corn.
Why is whole wheat pasta not gluten-free?
Despite the fact that whole wheat pasta is healthy for you and contains more nutrients than regular pasta, it is not gluten-free. The reason why it contains gluten is actually quite simple. Namely, it has everything to do with the raw material from which whole wheat pasta is made.
Whole wheat pasta is made from whole wheat durum wheat. Durum wheat is the most widely used type of wheat to make pasta. Both regular pasta and whole wheat pasta are made from this type of wheat.
But the problem is precisely in this raw material. Durum wheat, also called durum wheat, contains gluten. So because there is gluten in the wheat from which the pasta is made, it is inevitable that there will also be gluten in the whole wheat pasta. Therefore, we can safely say that all pasta made from wheat is definitely not gluten-free. Likewise, whole wheat pasta is not.
Are there any whole wheat pasta varieties that are gluten free?
The answer to this question is simple. There are no types of whole wheat pasta that are gluten-free.
There are many different forms of whole wheat pasta available. Think of the well-known whole wheat spaghetti or whole wheat penne. In addition to these two popular whole wheat pasta types, there are of course a lot of other forms that you may have never seen before. But no matter which type of whole wheat pasta you choose, all types of whole wheat pasta are not gluten-free.
This is because all types of whole wheat pasta are made from the same ball of pasta dough. After the whole wheat and water are kneaded into a nice pasta dough, the dough is bullied through a mold that gives the whole wheat pasta its final shape. Because all pasta shapes are basically made from the same ball of dough, none of them are gluten-free.
So no matter which shape whole wheat pasta you pick, whole wheat pasta is never gluten-free!
This type of pasta is gluten-free though
Of course, just because whole wheat pasta is not gluten-free does not mean that there is no gluten-free pasta at all. In fact, nowadays there are more and more high-quality gluten-free pastas available.
Gluten-free pastas are not made from wheat but from another raw material. As a result, this type of pasta is indeed gluten-free. Most gluten-free pastas are made from rice, corn or a combination of these two ingredients.
